My Reviews on Diving in Phuket with Andaman Coral Divers

The Best Scuba Diving Sites

Diving in Phuket is everywhere! You’ll find dozens of activities to do there, along with scuba diving! SCUBA Diving Centers in Phuket ready to take you where you want. Diving in Phuket is exciting, but the biggest advantage is that it’s an excellent starting point to explore the best sites in the Andaman Sea and the South of Thailand as a cruise to the Similan Islands and Surin Islands or the famous Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta.

For example, you can explore the beautiful reefs of Hin Daeng and Hin Muang. They are both listed among the best spots in the world! Hin Daeng is famous for its abundant marine life on the falling while Hin Muang is known for its beautiful, purple corals.

These two dive sites are also among the best places in the world to observe Whale Sharks ;-). You can also expect to encounter sharks Grey Reef, Leopard Sharks, or large schools of pelagic fish.

Two other interesting sites are spots of Racha Noi and Racha Yai, or the Manta Rays and Turtles are often observed. Nevertheless, the current can be strong on these sites, and it is better to be an experienced diver to enjoy.

There is also another site to explore: the King Cruiser Wreck. This site may be a dip in the same day trip with two other excellent sites: Anemone Reef and Shark Point. See Also: Dive Sites around Phuket.

You can also go diving in Thailand on the world famous site Richelieu Rock in the famous Surin Islands side during a day trip. This spot is known for Whale Sharks appearances!

Phuket is also the starting point for many liveaboards to the Similan and Surin Islands, two world-class destinations!

Best Time to Dive in Phuket

The climate is tropical on the island of Phuket, and the weather is hot and humid all year. There are two seasons:

The rainy season (wet season monsoon) is between the months of May and December. From June to October, there is heavy rain showers but rainy days are rare, it is usually torrential rains for two hours in the afternoon.

The hot, dry season occurs between the months of January and April. This is the best time to dive in Phuket to visit this area. Although it is the dry season, it can rain at times.

The peak tourist season is between the months of November and April with a peak in the months of December and January. It is advisable to avoid this time because the hotels are often full, and the room rates doubling see triple during this period! Also, the most popular dive sites are visited daily by tens of clubs, so you will not be underwater alone ;-). It is suggested to book in advance if traveling during this period. Diving cruises the Similan and Surin are also often full.

The air temperature varies between 25 ° C and 32 ° C, and the water temperature is about 29 ° C throughout the year.

Diving all year round is possible. However, the best time to dive in Phuket is between the months of December and April when visibility is excellent. If you prefer more quiet underwater, instead visit southern Thailand after January when the crowds are gone. Between April and October, the sea can be rough and visibility reduced in the water. Diving cruises in the Similan Islands, Surin, and Burma further north usually take place between the months of October and May.

Where to Sleep During Your Stay in Phuket?

There is a very broad range of accommodation in Phuket. You will find all ranges and all budgets. I generally use this website to book in advance my hotels in Thailand, especially in Phuket because it is usually the cheapest and it is free to change the dates or cancel the reservation, so it’s quite convenient.

Diving Courses in Phuket

Phuket is a very popular place to learn to dive and pass level 1 CMAS or PADI (Open Water). Since there are very many clubs and diving centers, competition is fierce, and the lessons of the price are not expensive. As against the quality is not always the same between the different clubs and it is sometimes beneficial to pay a little more for quality training and dive safely!

Conditions for Diving

Many dive sites are located all around Phuket and the nearby islands; diving conditions are very variable depending on the location and season.

Visibility: visibility can vary from poor to excellent depending on the place and season. 30% reduces visibility during the monsoon. It can also be reduced by the high density of plankton in the water, but it is what draws Manta Rays and Whale Sharks to those locations ;-). I remember my last dive on the wreck of the King Cruiser Wreck in December 2012 with a visibility of 1 meter … and a real power!

The currents are usually not a problem in the region. However, some sites may have a powerful current and are therefore reserved for experienced divers.

The water temperature varies between 27 ° C and 31 ° C throughout the year, and so you will not need your full suit, a 3mm shorty will do just fine!

Note: Do not expect to be alone in the water! The most famous dive sites are often crowded during the high season in December and January.

Fins, Mask, and Snorkel : Snorkeling in Phuket

There are good places to snorkel around Phuket. It is possible to organize day trips to discover the best places for snorkeling in the region. A known location is Coral Island, or the reef is beautiful and very close to Banana Bay and Long Beach.

Equipment for snorkeling can be rented on the beach or at our office. You can easily see a reef fauna fascinating in the clear water and little substance. However, be careful because the months between May and October and the currents can be strong and dangerous. The best time of year for the snorkeling is between the months of November and April when conditions are excellent in general.

Underwater Fauna: Fish and Coral

You can see all species of fish and marine mammals which you always dreamed in the Andaman Sea. The best known are of course the giant Manta Rays, Whale Sharks as well as several species of Shark Reef. Sharks Leopards and Green Turtles are also very common in the South of Thailand. You will also meet large schools of pelagic fish such as Jacks or Ignobilis Barracudas patrolling their territory. Macrofauna is also interesting and delight underwater photographers.

The coral is colorful, and there are many coral gardens to discover in very little water in snorkeling or diving at the end of overcoming security.

Description
I recently went on a diving trip in Thailand and especially Phuket. I'm not a big fan of this place for its touristy side (at the same time I went in full tourist season;-)). The island is still beautiful and is a great starting point to go diving in the best spots of the Andaman Sea.
